Following the outbreak of war on 4 August 1914, a considerable number of Old Witleian’s joined the forces to fight for King and country. We have recorded the names of 95 Old Witleians – to include two former members of staff – who died during, or as result of, the conflict on the Wormald-Filgate Memorial. The memorial is made of oak and copper from the former cadet ship HMS Britannia. The memorial is named after Mrs Wormald, a School Governor, who presented the memorial to the School and the bronze panels were donated by Colonel Edward Macartney Filgate, who dedicated the memorial in 1921. The School Archivist gathered information on each of the 95 Old Witleians and these details can be found by clicking on the names below.
Included on the memorial are four names of Old Witleians who died long after the war and not as a direct result of the war. If anyone has either a family connection or information they would like to share regarding these individuals, we would appreciate hearing from you.
