Art lessons at King Edward’s both challenge and cherish our pupils, giving them the chance to work in range of media to expand their ideas and enrich their outlook. We encourage them to develop a range of skills including digital media and photography as well as classic fine art skills. We want all our pupils to love art and design which are so central to both wellbeing and our modern global economy. We provide a safe environment where teachers actively promote adventurous approaches and risk-taking. Our focus is on enjoyment and engagement, and pupils relish the way there is rarely a ‘wrong’ response in this field whilst developing their creative ambition.
We have specialist art staff in the Art Department and offer a range of art courses to suit all interests and levels of ability. Boys and girls can engage in everything from drawing and painting to photography and digital image manipulation.
Courses offered:
Art is offered at GCSE and A-level. The photographs on this page feature the work of pupils in our exam classes: they strive to produce audacious, bold images and achieve results that acknowledge this.
Pupils from all year groups have the opportunity to display their work in the professional environment of the Bunker Gallery. We celebrate both our students and our Artists-in-Residence, promoting debate and stimulating discussion about the nature of art and the skills this discipline requires.
The Art department hosts workshops and masterclasses, organises trips to galleries and museums in London as well as an annual trip to St Ives. We also benefit from the exciting opportunities to see and make art at the Watts Gallery in Godalming and profit from the artistic heritage of our situation in an area of outstanding natural beauty that has inspired many artists over the past 150 years to produce amazing work. We hope our pupils will come away from these experiences inspired and enthusiastic about the possibilities of art and design.
There are annual awards to be won for GCSE and Sixth for Art. One prestigious Sixth Form prize is The Chase Haines.
